The lovely big trees on our walks sometimes lend themselves to a spot of climbing (especially if there might be cheese hidden) and I am pleased our wait is well proofed so I was able to capture the moment and then make sure she got down safely.
On this occasion we were walking somewhere different and Ayla showed signs of being uneasy and a little unsure in this new place with new smells and unknown territory to explore and also with no canine friends to show her the best places to go and help her feel more confident. This is where our scentwork games are so helpful they enable us to easily focus her natural behaviour and build her confidence by doing something she knows and loves and in a very short time she is having fun, relaxed and perfectly happy in her different surroundings.
It's good to remember that there are many factors that affect our dogs when out walking and something as simple as going somewhere different or not walking with the same dogs can cause them to feel concerned and sometimes vulnerable and they will look to you for support and protection. Under these circumstances don't expect them to perform difficult behaviours or something new you have taught them, instead bring out a toy or play a fun game that you normally play at home or on their regular walk - ask for easy tasks like 'sit' or 'down' and reward with high praise and treats - make sure your dog feels safe and trusts you to take care of them, be patient and keep practising building your relationship on trust and a mutual understanding of what is required.
